A Story of Redemption

Scripture

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”  2 Corinthians 5:17

Main Idea

Jesus doesn’t just rescue you from your past. He gives you a new identity, then walks you into freedom one surrendered thing at a time.

Andrew spent decades fixing an inside problem with outside solutions. A culture to fit into. A career. A new marriage. None of it worked, because you can’t heal a wound by decorating over it. And this isn’t really about Andrew. Everybody is carrying something.

Looking for Identity

Scripture

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?… If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”  Galatians 1:10

Overview

Greek and Peruvian, and kids made fun of Andrew. So he edited himself to fit the Cuban culture around him. It worked. But wear a costume long enough and you forget what’s underneath.

When your identity is built on acceptance from people, rejection will always have the final word.

Deeper Dive

Paul wrote Galatians to non-Jewish believers being told faith in Jesus wasn’t quite enough. Get circumcised, keep the calendar, look the part. The Greek behind “please” pictures a servant satisfying a master. You serve whoever you’re trying to impress. And in that world worth wasn’t self-assigned. The group handed it out, and being pushed to the edges was social death. So a kid remaking himself to belong is an ancient story, not a modern one. The gospel answer isn’t more confidence. The verdict came in before you performed.

Hidden Wounds

Scripture

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”  Psalm 34:18

Overview

Around age ten, Andrew was sexually abused. Almost nobody knew. He never dealt with it. He just got good at hiding it, and those are not the same thing. Buried pain doesn’t sit still. It steers.

Pain that is hidden is pain that remains in control.

Deeper Dive

Psalm 34 has a note at the top most of us skip. David wrote it after faking insanity in front of an enemy king to save his own life. Scratching at doors. Spit in his beard. So this isn’t written from a comfortable place. The Hebrew is sharper too. “Brokenhearted” pictures a clay jar shattered on stone. “Crushed in spirit” means ground to powder. Not cracked. Pulverized. And the promise isn’t that God fixes them. It’s that He is near. He didn’t back away when it got ugly. He moved closer.

• What’s the difference between healing from something and hiding it well?
• Why do we’d rather carry pain alone than let one safe person see it?

Religion Without Relationship

Scripture

“And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me…’”  Matthew 7:23

Overview

He wasn’t running from church. He was in it. Raised Catholic, altar boy until fifteen, and he genuinely believed. The problem showed up later. He knew about God. He didn’t know Him. It’s the difference between knowing a musician’s whole catalog and actually being their friend.

Religion changes your behavior. Relationship changes your heart.

Deeper Dive

This lands at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, and look at who Jesus is warning. Not skeptics. People who prophesied, drove out demons, did mighty works in His name. The Greek behind “knew” is the relational word, used for deep covenant closeness. He doesn’t say He never heard of them. He says there was never a relationship. Then He tells the two-builders story. Same storm, different foundation. From the street you can’t tell them apart. The weather sorts it out.

• Do you know about God, or know Him? How can you tell?
• If your private life with God vanished, would anyone notice?

Success Couldn’t Heal Brokenness

Scripture

“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”  Mark 8:36

Overview

The fire service gave him purpose, brotherhood, a career, an identity. Outwardly strong. Inside, not what it seemed. He was unfaithful in his first marriage, it ended in divorce with two kids in the middle, and he married the woman from the affair thinking that would fill the gap. It didn’t. You can change your address, your job, and your spouse. You can’t outrun yourself.

Success makes a terrible savior.

Deeper Dive

The setting isn’t an accident. Jesus says this near Caesarea Philippi, a city stacked with pagan shrines carved into the rock and a temple built for Caesar. Surrounded by monuments to power, He asks who people say He is, then talks about losing your life to find it. The location is the illustration. And the Greek for “soul” also means “life.” You can win the world and lose the life you lived while winning it. Counselors call the alternative a geographic cure. New city, same man.

• What have you hoped would finally make you feel whole?
• Does your identity come from what you do, or from who Jesus says you are?

The Turning Point

Scripture

“He drew me up from the pit of destruction… and set my feet upon a rock.”  Psalm 40:1-3

Overview

Eventually it all came down. Andrew reached a point where he intended to end his life. He doesn’t linger on that night, and neither should we. What matters is what happened next. His father called. Out of nowhere, at the exact moment it mattered. He believes God moved, and that call wasn’t just a rescue. It was an invitation into a different life.

Sometimes God allows us to reach the end of ourselves so we’ll finally discover the beginning of Him.

Deeper Dive

The pit isn’t a shallow hole. Ancient cisterns were cut into limestone and shaped like a bottle, narrow at the neck, plastered smooth so water wouldn’t escape. Slick walls, mud at the bottom. Joseph was thrown in one. Jeremiah sank into another. Here’s the thing about a cistern: you can’t climb out. Someone has to reach down. Notice the verbs. He drew, He set, He put a new song. All God. And the reason given is that many will see it and trust Him.

Walking in Freedom

Scripture

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”  John 8:36

Overview

Christ changed everything, just not all at once. Freedom was a process. God started asking him to remove things he’d leaned on for decades. Surrender turned out practical, not poetic: obedience in small things, accountability with people who ask hard questions, repentance that keeps happening. And somewhere in there, his identity finally settled.

Salvation happens in a moment, but freedom is learned through daily surrender.

Deeper Dive

The crowd tells Jesus they’ve never been slaves to anyone. That’s a stunning claim from a nation that lived through Egypt and Babylon with Roman soldiers down the street. People are good at denying the chains they wear. Then Jesus uses a picture they all knew. In a first-century household a slave had no permanent place and could be sold. A son belonged for life. And freedom was never earned by working harder. It was granted by the master. “Free indeed” means actually free, not free on paper.

• What has God asked you to remove that you’re still negotiating over?
• Who is allowed to ask you the uncomfortable question?

Summary

Identity from people, and rejection kept the final word. A buried wound that started driving. Religion without relationship. Success that made a terrible savior. Then the end of himself, and the beginning of God. Now freedom, learned daily.

Pastor Nathan said it simply. Jesus doesn’t improve our lives, He gives us a completely new identity. Salvation is the gift. Discipleship takes surrender. “Your past may explain you, but it no longer defines you.”

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”  Romans 8:1

Call to Action

This week, stop managing the thing you’ve been managing. You know what it is. Name it in front of God, then name it in front of one trusted person, because things kept in the dark keep their power. Then take the step you’ve been avoiding. Make the call. Remove the thing. You don’t have to clean yourself up first. God met Andrew at his lowest point, not his best one.

• Thank God that He named you before anyone else got a vote.
• Ask for courage to bring one hidden thing into the light this week.
• Pray for anyone who feels there’s no way forward, and ask God to make you willing to be the phone call.
• Ask God to name the specific thing He wants removed, and for strength to let it go.
