Main Idea

God has entrusted every believer with influence. Whether we realize it or not, our words, decisions, habits, and example are shaping the people around us. The question is not whether we are leaving a legacy. The question is what kind of legacy we are leaving. God calls us to be intentional with the people He has placed in our lives and faithful with the responsibilities He has entrusted to us.

Take Ownership of What God Has Entrusted to You

Scripture

Ephesians 6:4

"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."

Overview

One of the easiest things to do in life is assume someone else will take responsibility. Yet throughout Scripture, God consistently calls His people to take ownership of the assignments He has personally entrusted to them.

We cannot outsource obedience.

YOUR FIRST CALLING IS NOT SUCCESS. IT IS FAITHFULNESS.

Question

What responsibilities has God entrusted to you that require greater intentionality?

Deeper Dive

The Apostle Paul specifically addresses fathers in Ephesians 6, but the principle extends beyond parenting. God places people, opportunities, and responsibilities into our lives and expects us to steward them well. Whether it is our family, friendships, workplace, ministry, or personal walk with Christ, God calls us to active participation rather than passive observation.

Many believers fall into the trap of assuming spiritual growth happens automatically. It does not. Healthy relationships require investment. Strong faith requires cultivation. Godly influence requires intentionality. Throughout Scripture, faithful stewardship is never measured by perfection but by consistency. The people who make the greatest impact are often those who simply embrace the responsibilities God has placed in front of them.

Build a Legacy Worth Following

Scripture

Proverbs 22:6

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."

Overview

Every day we are building something. Through our choices, priorities, attitudes, and habits, we are creating a legacy that will outlive us.

The question is whether we are building intentionally or accidentally.

YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR PAST, BUT YOU CAN CHANGE WHAT YOU PASS ON.

Question

When people observe your life, what values and priorities do they see most clearly?

Deeper Dive

A legacy is much more than what we leave behind financially. Scripture places a far greater emphasis on the spiritual and relational impact of a person's life. Long after possessions disappear, the influence of character remains. The way we treat people, handle adversity, pursue God, and live out our faith often leaves a deeper impression than we realize.

Many people carry wounds from previous generations. Some experienced healthy examples while others experienced dysfunction, neglect, or brokenness. The good news of the gospel is that our future is not determined by our past. Through Christ, every believer has the opportunity to establish a new legacy. God's grace enables us to become people who bring healing where there was hurt, faith where there was fear, and hope where there was discouragement.

Don't Delay What God Is Calling You To Do

Scripture

James 1:22

"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

Overview

Knowledge without action produces very little change. Transformation happens when we move from hearing God's Word to obeying it.

Every act of obedience starts with a decision.

A GODLY LEGACY DOESN'T BEGIN WITH PERFECTION. IT BEGINS WITH A DECISION.

Question

What is one area of your life where God is calling you to stop waiting and start acting?

Deeper Dive

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is postponing obedience. We convince ourselves that we will pray more later, serve later, forgive later, or share our faith later. Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us that today is the day to respond to God's leading. Delayed obedience often becomes disobedience.

Billy Graham's reflection about wishing he had spent more time with his family highlights a truth that applies to everyone. Life moves quickly. Opportunities come and go. Relationships require attention. Spiritual growth requires action. The most meaningful changes often begin with simple steps taken consistently over time. God is not asking us to change everything overnight. He is asking us to take the next faithful step.

Summary

The Father's Assignment reminds us that influence is a gift and responsibility from God. While the message was directed toward fathers, its principles apply to every believer.

God has entrusted each of us with people to influence, opportunities to steward, and a legacy to build. We honor Him when we embrace those responsibilities, invest intentionally in others, and respond quickly when He calls us to action.

Faithfulness today creates impact tomorrow.

Call to Action

This week, identify one responsibility God has placed in your life that deserves greater attention.

Maybe it is your relationship with God.

Maybe it is your family.

Maybe it is a friendship.

Maybe it is a ministry opportunity.

Maybe it is an area of obedience you have delayed.

Whatever it is, take one practical step this week. Don't wait for the perfect moment. Start where you are and trust God with the results.

Prayer Prompts
