Proverbs 6:16-19
“There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.”
Lies are not harmless. Lies have always and will always destroy trust, create a false reality, and break down relationships that we've often work hard to build up. With that said, God give us a way forward! When we choose to confess and rebuke our sins, and walk in integrity, we step out of deception and into the freedom of Christ.
“The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” Proverbs 12:22
Lies are the foundation of every relationship... JUST KIDDING... watch the sermon for the inside joke!
TRUTH is the foundation of every relationship; marriages, friendships, relationships, churches, even our relationship with God. Lies eat away at that foundation. Lies eat away at the "GLUE" which is truth. Once trust is broken, it's not easy to regain. It is a long and steep road ahead.
ONE LIE CAN ERASE A THOUSAND TRUTHS
Biblically speaking, trust was often tied to covenants. A covenant is a binding promise between people and with God. When we look deeper into scripture we see that breaking trust wasn’t just considered a "personal failure"; it was viewed as breaking faith with God Himself. That’s why lying was and is so destructive. It doesn’t just damage a relationship, it tears at something sacred.
Think about it in "everyday terms". Lies weaken intimacy and trust between a husband and wife. Lies will make friends "second-guess" each other. Lies cause people to lose confidence in their leaders. Once suspicion enters into the story, it changes everything. People will start to directly coorelate your lies with your character. That’s why Scripture says God detests lying lips; because it destroys the very unity He loves.
Where in your life do you need to rebuild trust by being honest?
“Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” Proverbs 12:19
The TRUTh is that lies don’t just cover the truth, they create a false world, a false reality. They trap us and others in a story that isn’t real.
DECEPTION MAY FEEL LIKE FREEDOM, BUT IT’S ACTUALLY A PRISON
If we take a look at "the ancient world", truth was seen as living in line with reality. Lies, by contrast, created a false reality, or in modern day terms "YOUR TRUTH", and in turn created instability. Spiritually, it’s the exact same story today. Simply put, God is truth, and when we live in lies, we align ourselves more with the character of satan than that of Gods. We begin to live in the "fog" and in "filters" unable to recognize what is "TRUTH" anymore.
We’ve all seen this played out before. One “small” or "white" lie (never understood why we started giving "colors" to lies, but anyways...) at work leads to another, then another, until someone’s entire credibility collapses. Their character is now defined by their lies. Worse of all, when we repeat lies often enough, we start to believe them ourselves. That’s when deception becomes self-deception, and that’s the most dangerous place to be because you don't even know your in it. Truth clears the fog. Lies blur it.
Have you ever seen lies, whether your own or someone else’s, create a false sense of reality? What happened?
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
Freedom begins with confession and rebuking. When we bring lies into the light, their power breaks. Integrity does not mean that we've never lied. It just means we refuse to keep living in those lies.
INTEGRITY IS COSTLY, BUT DISHONESTY IS DEADLY
If we look at Jewish tradition, confession wasn’t just about guilt, it was about restoration. To confess your sins was to return back into community and to God’s favor. The early church carried this forward, treating confession as a doorway to healing and holiness.
Today, confession works the same way. Listen very closely: lies don’t disappear on their own. That is a LIE the enemy want you to believe. They have to be confessed, turned away from, and replaced with truth. Yes, confession can be uncomfortable. Yes, confession can seem like "work". Yes, confession may have consequences. But it’s also freeing. When we speak the truth, even when it costs us something, God not only forgives, He begins rebuilding what dishonesty has broken.
What step of confession or truth-telling do you need to take this week?
Lies tear down trust and separate us from God. Truth does the exact opposite; it restores relationships, clears confusion, and reflects Christ. Choosing confession and integrity is the way to walk in freedom.
Don’t just think about this, do something with it. Identify one area where you’ve been hiding behind lies. Confess it. Make it right. Take a step toward truth this week before the damage goes deeper.
