Scripture

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

Additional Scripture References

  • Philippians 4:6-7
  • Matthew 6:25-30
  • Exodus 16:4-5 (God providing manna daily in the wilderness)

Main Idea

Worry is one of the heaviest emotions we carry. It consistently carries our thoughts into tomorrow, when tomorrow hasn't even happened yet. What this ends up doing is it robs us of peace today, and gives us this illusion that we’re in control. The good news is that Jesus offers us something better: daily trust in Him. God doesn’t promise us a life without trouble, however, He does promise His presence, His provision, and His peace right here, right now.

Trapped in Tomorrow

Scripture

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

Overview

When we think about it, worry truly lives in the future. It keeps us stuck in the “what ifs” of life instead of living in God’s grace for today. Now, hear this out because we can twist God's word to say "well... Pastor said I don't need to plan and prepare for anything"... no, not true! Planning is wise, but worry isn’t preparation, it’s suffocation. It steals your joy, drains your faith, and distracts you from what God is doing in the "now".

Worry isn’t preparation. it’s suffocation.

Deeper Dive

When looking at Exodus in the Old Testament we see an amazing miracle; God gave Israel manna in the wilderness one day at a time. Literally, provision from heaven! What was crazy was, if they tried to hoard it for tomorrow, it spoiled. Why? Because He was teaching them daily dependence. The same is true for us. God doesn’t give us tomorrow’s grace ahead of time; He gives us what we need for today.

Think about how often our minds run ahead:

  • What if the deal falls through?
  • What if my health declines?
  • What if I’m not enough?

These fears are what we can consider "imaginary futures", not present realities. Jesus reminds us that we can’t live in tomorrow When we choose to stay in today, we start to see God’s hand in the what He is doing today: answered prayers, daily provision, quiet moments of peace.

Question

Where in your life do you find yourself “trapped in tomorrow,” and how can you practice staying present in God’s grace for today?

The Illusion of Control

Scripture

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Overview

What we tend to do as humans is we claim our "worry" to actually be "responsability" however... that's just a disguises or an excuse we use. Worry makes us believe we’re being “realistic” or “just planning ahead,” when in reality, all we are truly desiring is complete control. But control is an illusion. It never delivers the peace it promises.

Worry gives you responsibility but robs you of rest

Deeper Dive

The Apostle Paul gives us clear a clear reminder and word of encouragement: peace DOES NOT come from having every detail figured out, it comes from bringing everything to God. Yet many of us treat our strategy and planning like safety nets while prayer becomes an afterthought. The result? We are more exhausted, not more secure.

What worry does is It convinces us we can manage life if we hold it tightly enough... that's a lie!  No matter how strong you grip, you were never designed to carry that weight. Only God can carry that! Recognizing this helps us to surrender daily. Instead of saying, “I have to figure this out,” we begin to say, “God, I trust You with this.”

Question

What area of your life do you keep trying to control, and how would surrendering it to God bring you peace?

Trust Is Today’s Assignment

Scripture

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Matthew 6:26-27

Overview

Trust isn’t a one-time event, it’s a daily choice. Jesus calls us to let go of tomorrow and live fully dependent on Him today.

Trust isn’t denial. It’s deciding to stand on something stronger than your feelings.

Deeper Dive

In Matthew 6 we see Jesus pointing us back to creation. Birds don’t stockpile, but God still feeds them. Flowers don’t toil, but God still clothes them in beauty and splendor. If God provides for even the birds and the flowers, how much more will He provide for us? Trust shifts our focus and perspective from what we can’t control to the One who controls it all. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we do know who holds tomorrow!

Choosing trust doesn’t simply erase uncertainty, it just changes how we carry it. Every morning you have the choice: will you carry the weight of tomorrow or lean into God’s presence for today?

Question

What is one practical way you can choose trust today instead of worry?

Summary

Worry weighs us down, pulls us into a future that doesn’t exist, and keeps us from the peace God offers. Control is an illusion—it will never bring rest. But trust is today’s assignment. God’s grace is for this moment, not tomorrow’s fears. When we surrender to Him, we find a peace that’s deeper than our circumstances.

Call to Action

This week, make it personal. Each morning, before you pick up your phone or start your to-do list, speak these words:
“God, I trust You with this day. I trust You with what I can’t control. I trust You with what I don’t understand. And I trust that You’re already working in what I can’t see.”
Don’t wait for tomorrow. Start today.

Prayer Prompts
